Revision: After 9/11 people put their differences aside and came together to confront an unspeakable horror and loss. For a while the country seemed more awake, empathetic and understanding knowing everyone was in this together. Gradually, however, things began to change. The initial loss and resolve that fueled our actions and attitudes became distorted and deluded. To criticize became unpatriotic and to be different became dangerous. This post 9/11 mentality mirrored and bolstered a lot of existing attitudes in our country. As a result, while most have found their feet and are walking back toward a healthier middle ground; some are stuck in this mindset. Based on personal observation and a completely non-scientific study, it seems a disproportionate number of this group live in Tennessee and more specifically Knoxville. In the Uncovering Lost Knoxville postcard project the city’s recent history shortly before and after 9/11 is reinvented to try and make sense of its priorities and beliefs. These “tourist postcards” are distributed internationally and placed in strategic locations to encourage discussion and identify potentially damaging attitudes that still exist throughout our country.
